WHO ARE THE NEWPORT KARATE CENTRE
Founded and Jointly run by Sensei’s David Lloyd & Kerry Straeker, are both JKA card members as well hold Dan grades under Shihan Maseo Kawasoe 8th Dan JKA JKAWF. ‘The Newport Karate Centre’ known as ‘TheNKC’ now have over 45 years of experience to draw from in the art of Traditional Shotokan Karate-Do and provides students and instructors with a fully equipped friendly and professionally run dojo where they can practice and master their karate skills accordingly.

Collectively we have over 45 years of experience delivering Kihon, Kata & Kumite the 3 cores of of Shotokan Karate-Do.

Dedicated Dojo open 51 weeks of the year
Open throughout the year, including school breaks, summer and easter holidays etc. etc.
Our three core principles:
1. to provide training at an affordable price without sacrificing the quality of training.
2. to practice and teach traditional based Shotokan Karate-Do, focusing on the 3 core principles of Kihon, Kata & Kumite at the same time offering a balanced and safe approach to the application ‘Bunkai’ of karate in modern day life.
3. to have no contracts, no gimmicks and no hidden fee’s.

Hello I’m Liv! The owner and creator of Liv’s Boxfit, based in Newport at the TheNKC Dojo!
I started Boxfit in April 2023! With an all ladies group! After good success and over 60 members joining me within the first 6 months I decided to expand and add on a weekday class open to all! Ladies, men, children, all abilities and complete in inclusivity!
Our classes are
Wednesday 6 pm – all welcome

BIO:
David is one of the co-founders and joint Instructor of TheNKC known as ‘The Newport Karate Centre’ based in Newport, South Wales, U.K. with Kerry Straeker, David was awarded both his 1st (Sho) Dan, 2nd (Ni) Dan and 3rd (San) Dan under the critical eye of Sensei Masao Kawasoe 8th Dan JKA & JKAWF.

BIO:
Kerry started karate in 1972 at the Exeter Shotokan Karate Club, Devon, under Sensei Dave Collacott with gradings by Karate Union of Great Britain, and is co-founder and joint Instructor of ‘The Newport Karate Centre’ with David Lloyd, Kerry was awarded his 1st (Sho) Dan, 2nd (Ni) Dan & 3rd (San) Dan by Sensei Masao Kawasoe 8th Dan JKA & JKAWF.

Dylan Powell – Senpai

BIO:
Dylan started Karate in 1989 at Caerleon Shotokan Karate Club which was being run by brothers Sensei’s Chris & Richard Evans. Graded (proudly) through all the ranks and recieved his 1st (Sho)Dan from Maseo Kawasoe Sensei 7th Dan JKA & JKAWF in 1993. Joined the TheNKC in 2023 as Senpai (assistant Instructor).
What services do we offer
Beginners, Juniors & Adult Training
For those that are new (beginners) to martial arts, we offer a compulsory Introduction to Shotokan Karate-Do course, as well as separate classes for (Juniors) 8 to 15 year olds and (Adults) 16 to 75+ year olds, these are mixed Male & Female classes.
Beginners
10 x 1 hour lesson plan
You will be able to train upto 2 times per week on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s
1st year TNKC membership and Insurance included
Free Course Grading
Student must complete the course to be able to take the course grading.
Grading/License Book
All students must renew their license annually in order to continue with their training.
- You must complete the course to be able to grade at the end of the introduction course
Juniors
Grade every 3 months
Students must train at least 22 sessions within 3 months to be able to grade.
Must have valid TNKC License to be able to grade.
Annual TNKC License £20
All students must renew their license annually in order to continue with their training.
Grading Fee £25 per student
Grading fee including new belt £31 providing the student passes their grading.
Adults
Grade every 3 months
Students must train at least 22 sessions within 3 months to be able to grade.
Must have valid TNKC License to be able to grade.

FIRST TIME LICENCE HOLDERS MUST PAY AN ADDITIONAL ONE-OFF £10 FOR THEIR LICENCE RECORD BOOK.
OUR CLASSES
All grades training days
All students should try and attend 2 classes per week which is the minimum requirement for normal advancement of their karate training.
Junior Classes
8 to 15 year olds
Tuesdays
6:30pm to 7:45pm
Thursdays
6:30pm to 7:45pm
Adult Classes
16 to 75+ year olds
Tuesdays
7:45pm to 9:00pm
Thursdays
7:45pm to 9:00pm
So that the class can begin at the correct time, please can all students arrive no later that 10 minutes before each class starts.
